Hospital-sponsored lotteries seem such as a win-win, but are they? One expert says ‘no.’
Many hospitals that are canadian lotteries being utilized as fundraisers. Prizes ranging from large cash benefits to real estate and cars are given away to lucky champions, while the proceeds are accustomed to support the medical operations at the hospitals.
For many, this seems just like a win-win proposition. But one or more big title in the Canadian medical industry thinks why these lotteries could be much more dangerous than people assume.
Medical Journal Editor Speaks Out
Into the many recent issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, editor-in-chief Dr. John Fletcher had written an editorial stating that hospitals choosing to perform these lotteries should take time to ensure they’re protecting players who are at risk for problem gambling when they want to reside as much as their social duties.
‘It is contradictory for legislation to ban hospitals from selling one potentially harmful, but legal, addictive item on their premises tobacco while allowing them to actively promote another lotteries,’ wrote Dr. Fletcher. ‘Have we lost our moral compass to such an extent that individuals are blinded to your duty to ‘first do no harm’ by the attraction of easy income?’
